Why I haven't posted much about Rovegate

That's easy. There's no point in getting all fired up in hopes of seeing Rove frog marched anywhere because it ain't never gonna happen. As soon as Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald files indictment paperwork on Rove, King Goerge will pardon him, as Ford did Nixon, for anything he MIGHT have done. Then we'll all be standing around with our thumbs in our ears while the GOP wipes their collective asses with the Constitution--again.

We live in the realm of, "Yeah? Well, what're YOU gonna do about it?" The only answer for another year and a half is, "Nothing." Come the mid-terms, however, we can do a lot, i. e., elect Democrats to every possible office in the land in hopes of stopping the neocons and theo-fascists.

Don't sit there, get involved. As things stand, it'll take a generation to clean up the enormous messes King Goerge and Co. have made of, in and in the name of this country. So we have to start now to be ready for the mid-terms.

Do something every day.

1768 dead, 13,438 wounded for King Goerge's lies

Americans, that is. Nearly 25,000 Iraqi dead. And, dammit, we're still not getting any of Saddam's oil. Who's running this war, anyway?

Extreme Court nominee Roberts is dangerous; Dems' opposition could be worse.

He's been a judge for two whole years. And the theo-fascists love him. He's an unqualified, ultra right-wing hacktivist. 'Nuff said. Let the games begin.

I have no use for this guy. He's not a bad choice because he's against abortion. He's a bad choice because he's for fascism. But I'm much more concerned with how the Democrats will oppose him.

Roberts is anti-Rove v. Wade. For the most part, so am I. The political and social debate should be about personal responsibility before the fact rather than abortion after the fact. But since rethugs and theo-fascists are blindly against all forms of abortion, Dems must be for it. And that's bad.

Dems have allowed themselves to be called and defined as baby-eaters for over 30 years. That's because they use intellectual arguments instead of moral ones. I fear they haven't learned anything since Roe, and will pull out the same scripts they've always used.

Sadly, few people have intellectual arguments with themselves, much less with others. Instead, most people make decisions based on emotions. Rethugs and theo-fascists know this and make the most of that knowledge. They use emotional arguments to appeal to people who believe emotional experiences are religious experiences. Ergo, calling Dems baby-eaters gets people fired up on a level which Dems cannot overcome.

I fear the Dems aren't ready for this fight. I fear they'll once again let the theo-fascists frame the debate and the debaters. If the Dems concentrate on what Judge Roberts is against instead of what he's for, they will lose, and lose badly.

Meanwhile, media attention will be taken away from Rove, Iraq, Ohio ("Coingate"), the economy, Halliburton, and all the other messes King Goerge has made in his 4 1/2 years in power. We must hope the Dems can oppose King Goerge, in general, and Judge Roberts, in particular, at the same time. If they can, the worthlesscorporatemedia will have to respond. Otherwise, we'll have all Roberts, all the time, King Goerge's numbers will climb back up undeservedly, and his agenda will move forward.

America can't stand any more of King Goerge's fascist agenda. As things are now, it'll take a generation to repair the damage. And I have no idea from where the leaders will come since most known Democrats are either corporate whores or moderates.

And those people simply will not get the job done.

Washington, DC, — Long before the Karl Rove scandal grew into today’s political maelstrom, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington sent a letter to President Bush on January 28, 2004 asking that he call upon the White House Counsel to investigate Vice President Cheney's confirmation of leaked classified information in an interview with the Rocky Mountain News on January 9, 2004. As of today, no such investigation has taken place.

Gallup Finds Bush Approval Rating at New Low--and Compares to Other Presidents

NEW YORK A Gallup poll analysis released today finds President Bush's job approval rating at the lowest of his presidency and, at 47.4%, below 50% for only the second time.

This compares to the following at the same point in their time in office: Eisenhower 63.6%, Reagan 58.7%, Clinton 56.3, Truman 48.7%, Nixon 44% (during Watergate) and Johnson 42% (at a low point in the Vietnam war).

By Gallup's chart, Bush's current rating is 171st out of 236 for any quarter of a year, going back to Truman in the White House.

“Broadly speaking,” Gallup comments, “presidents who have had similar quarterly averages to Bush's most recent one did not show much improvement going forward…

“Clearly, Bush is off to an inauspicious start to his second term in office. He had average a 62% approval rating during his first term in office.”

Barney Frank: Start Impeachment Probe Now

Rep. Barney Frank said late Monday that Congress should begin an impeachment investigation into the Bush administration's handling of the Leakgate scandal and not wait for Special Proscecutor Patrick Fitzgerald to determine whether any laws were broken.

King Goerge set to introduce Extreme Court nominee tonight, 9 pm

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said the Bush administration was asking television outlets to broadcast the speech live across the country. Bush's spokesman would not identify the president's choice. But there was intense speculation Tuesday that it would be Judge Edith Clement of the U.S. Court of Appeals in New Orleans.

No one claimed to have been told (leaked?) the name by Bush, but Republican strategists and others focused on Clement, a 57-year-old jurist who was confirmed on a 99-0 vote by the Senate when she was elevated to the appeals court in 2001.

U.S. lays groundwork in Eastern Europe

The U.S. Army is conducting joint military exercises this month in Bulgaria and Romania as a key test of Pentagon plans to develop Eastern European bases as staging areas for fighting in the Middle East.

Beginning Tuesday, 1,500 U.S. troops, some of them bound for Iraq, will join 400 Romanian soldiers in urban warfare training. The port and military air base at Constanta on the Black Sea also are part of the exercise, just as they are expected to play a role in future U.S. deployments.

In neighboring Bulgaria to the south, 700 U.S. and Bulgarian troops are conducting armored warfare training.

Did Greenspan know about the London bombings in advance?

The terrorist attacks in London took place on Thursday. The Fed dramatically increased the pool of liquidity available for stocks to a multi-year high 48 hours before that---an ideal amount of time for that liquidity to filter into the market---and kept it elevated for the next few days. And indeed, it worked. The stock market saw heavy buying right at the opening bell on Thursday and has shot straight up since then.

Why did the Fed do this? Was it just another coincidence in our financial markets that somehow managed to immediately precede a major geopolitical event?

One person can give us some answers easily and quickly: Alan Greenspan. Doesn't it behoove him to do so before he rides off into the sunset a few months from now?

The Nation -- Last May the Republican-dominated House of Representatives voted to loosen President Bush's limits on embryonic stem cell research, allowing scientists to study cells derived from soon-to-be discarded embryos at fertility clinics. Senate Democrats and moderate Republicans could pass similar legislation as soon as this week. Conservatives realize they're opposing a popular policy that could be used against them as a wedge issue in midterm elections next year and in 2008. So Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has devised an alternative that undermines science while scoring political points.

Okay, Lugar said "El Espanol," not "El Kabong." But both are equally believeable. Plus this'll distract from Rove and Iraq, feed amtalkingheadradio, FAUXNEWS and (other) fiction writers for a while longer. In a year, we could see "Walker, Texas Ranger" catching terists every weekend. Salma Hyek could be the Border Patrol's version of Sidney Bristow. And Tom Clancy might write another novel.

The first logical action in the war on terr?

If this is the brilliant propaganda ploy I think it is, it just might make future would-be terists stop and think before trusting their "handlers."

BRITISH police are considering the possibility that the four key suspects in last week's London attacks may have been tricked into setting off their bombs, a British newspaper has reported.
"We do not have hard evidence that the men were suicide bombers," a Scotland Yard spokesman told The Sunday Telegraph.

"It is possible that they did not intend to die."

According to the paper, one police hypothesis is that the bombers were tricked by a "master" who told them they would have time to escape -- when in fact the devices were set to go off immediately.

If the Brits are telling this story to spread distrust among potential terists, bully for them. Too bad King Goerge doesn't have people this smart working for him.

King Goerge's FBI doesn't give a dead rat's ass about corporate pirates

But they sure keep close tabs on the ACLU and Greenpeace.

WASHINGTON, July 17 - The Federal Bureau of Investigation has collected at least 3,500 pages of internal documents in the last several years on a handful of civil rights and antiwar protest groups in what the groups charge is an attempt to stifle political opposition to the Bush administration.

The F.B.I. has in its files 1,173 pages of internal documents on the American Civil Liberties Union, the leading critic of the Bush administration's antiterrorism policies, and 2,383 pages on Greenpeace, an environmental group that has led acts of civil disobedience in protest over the administration's policies, the Justice Department disclosed in a court filing this month in a federal court in Washington.

BAGHDAD, Iraq Jul 16, 2005 — Eleven U.S. soldiers have been charged with assaulting detainees in Iraq, the military said Saturday, while three British soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in a rare attack in the relatively stable southern part of the country.

The U.S. military said in a statement that the charges against the 11 troops, who served in the Baghdad area but were not otherwise identified, were filed Wednesday after another soldier complained about the alleged assaults.

Sunday gun blogging

Because Friday is usually a slow news day, people post their "Friday cat blogging," "Friday girl-watching blogging" or "Friday flower blogging." I thought I'd do something you probably won't find on another "librul," "left-leaning" or "anti-Bush" blog: Guns. Feel free to ask questions about how to, you know, get ready.

I believe people should be familiar with guns. I believe people at the very least should know how to unload one, put one on "SAFE," or just pick one up without shooting off a toe. I believe people should know the differences between a revolver and a semi-auto pistol. I believe people should know the differences between hunting, target and military rifles ("assault-style weapons" are a separate issue, and the subject of something of a Rant&Rave...later). And I believe people should know a little about shotguns; although I care the least about these, I know how to handle them.

I own a few guns and enjoy target shooting on weekends. I'm fortunate to know several people who own many guns, who teach me about their guns, and who let me shoot them with ammo I provide, which is fair. As a result, in recent years I've become familiar with guns ranging from .22 caliber pistols up to a Browning M2 .50 caliber heavy machine gun. Mostly I'm lucky to have a friend who lives 'way out in the country where we shoot privately and safely without having to pay to go to a range. So I thought it might be different if, from time to time, I wrote about shooting interesting guns.

I'll start with my buddy's "Yellow Boy," a reproduction 1866 Winchester lever-action carbine that he uses in Cowboy Action Shooting competitions. It's the most recent "new" gun I've shot for the first time (yesterday), and is a very nice one. It's an exact replica (click headline for picture) except for caliber: The original "Yellow Boys" (and iron-framed 1866 Winchesters) were in .44 Henry, this one is in .45 Colt (aka .45 "Long Colt.")

The "Yellow Boy" is a classic cowboy rifle seen in countless westerns. Most recently, the late Michael Jeter used one in OPEN RANGE. You can recognize it by its brass frame, hence the nickname, "Yellow Boy," given the rifle by Native Americans 140 years ago. Its older brother, the "Henry," became available in 1860 and also had a brass frame. You can distinguish the older "Henry" from the "Yellow Boy" by looking at the wood: the "Henry" has no wood in front of the frame while the "Yellow Boy" has a wood forearm like all subsequent cowboy rifles.

The "Henry" saw service during the Civil War in limited numbers. But the Henry company was not successful, and Winchester bought the patents. The 1866 "Yellow Boy" is essentially an 1860 "Henry" with one significant improvement. It loads through a gate on the right side of the frame, again like all subsequent cowboy rifles, instead of from the front as on the "Henry." The "Yellow Boy" introduced this improvement which lets the shooter load more quickly, as well as allowing the existence of the wood forearm the "Henry" could not have because of how it loaded. This wood forearm prevents the shooter's "weak" hand from getting burned on a hot barrel, plus it gives a better grip.

This "Yellow Boy" is a true carbine, i. e., it has a fairly short barrel (19"). (Cowboy "rifles" have 22-26" barrels.) Since the tube magazine underneath the barrel can be no longer than the barrel, length determines magazine capacity. This carbine holds 10+1, or 10 rounds in the tube magazine plus one in the chamber. Longer-barrelled rifles obviously hold more rounds.

All cowboy rifles fired pistol ammo until the first Winchester "big-bore" (more powerful rifle-caliber) rifle came along in 1876. Even then, the pistol caliber rifles were the most popular with cowboys who normally left the big-bores to buffalo and bear hunters. Cowboys usually had pistols and rifles in the same caliber so one ammo supply on their belts fed both guns.
My friend's "Yellow Boy" is chambered in .45 Colt which, in either original or modern loadings, is nearly as powerful as Dirty Harry's .44 magnum. (The original .44 Henry cartridge is somewhat less powerful than either of those, but is still most effective.) Shooting cowboy pistol ammo in a cowboy rifle or carbine is a most pleasant experience since the length and weight of the rifle absorb all the energy of the mild recoil. There is practically no "kick" at all.

The ergonomics of the "Yellow Boy," combined with its relatively short length and light weight (about seven pounds loaded) make it a natural pointer. It handles and shoulders easily, fits most shooters comfortably. The sights are simple, but at moderate ranges (out to 300 yards), they're plenty good.

The upshot of yesterday's trigger time is that, given my near total lack of experience with cowboy guns, I can say that the "Yellow Boy" is extremely easy to learn to shoot well. I'm at best an above average rifle shot, but nothing special. However, with my first ten rounds in the "Yellow Boy," I got ten hits on a small target. The lever action is smooth as silk, letting you shoot like they do in the movies--you can keep the rifle shouldered and easily work the lever quickly to load the next round without wiggling all over the target. For a few minutes, I was a cowboy which, after all, is the point of shooting historic guns.

The "Yellow Boy" is a beautiful cowboy rifle, pleasant and fun to shoot. Cowboy rifles come in a wide variety of calibers, from .22 up to .45-70. I believe the most popular are .44-40, for those who like things original and authentic, and the .45 Colt (which was used only in pistols in the Wild West). The two rounds are virtually equal in performance. I heartily recommend visiting a range or cowboy event to see some interesting and historic guns. If you do so, look for the "Yellow Boy" and see if you can arrange to shoot "the gun that won the West."

Next time: The Thompson submachine gun.
